Hermann’s has been a wonderful and indispensible venue for jazz lovers, and a necessary haven for  local, country-wide and international jazz musicians throughout the decades.  I’ve been performing there since inception.  I have recorded CD projects there, held other CD release concerts there, and have performed with and have gone to hear stellar artists there.  It is now the only regular jazz venue in Victoria, and without doubt has the best grand piano of any performance club in town.  Audiences are without exception there to listen and appreciate, and my most enjoyable and meaningful gigs have been at Hermann’s.
For the sake of audiences and performers, I applaud the most worthwhile efforts of the Society to preserve this very important facet of Victorian and Canadian culture and vow to participate and contribute in any way I can.

Hermann’s Launches Legacy Album, Celebrates 40 Years of Live Music

Posted on Posted in Blog, News Items

Hemann’s Jazz Club is celebrating 40 years in business with their first ever album launch featuring live recordings of all the legendary musicians who have played on the Hermann’s stage since the beginning. The legacy album, Cheers to 40 Years, will debut with a live stream celebration show on International Jazz Day, April 30.

Listeners of both the album and album-launch show will be transported back in time to the full-band sounds of swing, jazz and Dixieland, when the club first opened at the Bastion Inn on Government Street before moving to its now View Street location in 1986.

The album will feature musicians such as Toni Blodgett, who was part of the Al Pease Trio, the first band that Hermann ever hired in 1981.

Blodgett herself can recall the excitement of the club’s early days.

“He [Hermann] brought over a full Dixieland band, a seven piece from Washington state, and he fell in love with that big sound,” she says. “There was a mezzanine in the building and that’s when he started having his Dixieland band up there and a dance floor was available.”

“That was the beginning and he never, never stopped.”

Neither did Toni. Toni’s been playing a regular Sunday slot at Hermann’s since those early days and attributes her success as a musician to the club.

“Hermann was always supportive,” says Toni. “‘We’ve got to stick together’ was his favourite line.”

As apparent from the number of musicians featured on the album, many musicians have built lifelong careers from the Hermann’s stage. Not all will make it on the album according to manager Nichola Walkden, who mentions deceased greats such as Borgy Borgerson, who was inducted into the Banjo Hall of Fame with Kermit the Frog and Béla Fleck.

Musicians that listeners will hear on the album include Don Leppard, Don Cox, Joey Smith, Sharon Wadsworth CanUS, Dixieland Express, Lloyd Arntzen and Al Pease with Blackstick, and the Tom Vickery Trio joined by Charlie Gates. There will be additional pre-recorded tracks with Nori MacFarlane, Hugh Barclay, Jim Armstrong and Ernie Cockayne.

The album launch marks a time of rebirth for the club, as it also signals the beginning of Hermann’s Jazz Club’s new record label Hermann’s Live, putting to use the high-end equipment they use to pivot and live stream all their shows.

“Hermann’s Live has been a dream of a lot of people for a lot of years,” says club manager Nichola Walkden. “Hermann’s Jazz Club is iconic – it’s well known to be the best listening room in the country. When people tour here they wish for the recording. The work that our livestream techs have put in over the past year has created this for us. We very much look forward to what can be done – live recordings, capturing timeless moments. To get this together in celebration of forty years of live musical presentation is a cool moment,” she says.

While the community can’t party like they did in 1981, or even 2019, manager Nichola Walkden says she hopes live stream listeners will still be raising their glasses from their homes in the Hermann’s spirit. She recalls that Hermann was always known to throw a great party.

“Every so often, the band would stop its number and bid us raise glasses with this refrain: “Zicke, zacke, zicke, zacke, hoi, hoi, hoi!” (meaning something like “A toast, a toast, a cozy place! One, two, three, drink!” says Walkden.

You can join Walkden for a toast and lively music on April 30 on Hermann’s YouTube live stream account or on their website www.hermannsjazz.com at 7:00 PM, PST.

The album will be available on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms.

Welcome back to Hermann’s! Here’s how we’re keeping you safe.

Posted on Posted in Blog, News Items, Uncategorized

Our number one goal is to keep all of our staff, musicians, and guests safe. Though some things have changed, we are still the same Hermann’s! Here’s the changes we’ve made to make your visit safe and comfortable:

We’ve Made Our Entrance More Efficient

  • guests pre-order tickets and dinner selections on our website creating an efficient check-in and limiting contact with servers
  • Our back hallway is cleared so that the doors can be used for airflow and as an additional exit way to keep the area spacious.

We Have a New Pre-ordering and Buffet Dinner System

  • Our dinner service is now served gourmet-buffet style, plated by head chef Ahmed or one of our servers. This allows you to see the buffet options behind plexiglass, and see your meal being plated. We offer a buffet of robust dinner options including for gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan diets. See the menu here: http://hermannsjazz.com/menu
  • Our guests now also have the option to order sweet or savory-pies baked in house. These can also be pre-ordered as well in addition to or instead of the buffet.
  • No bar service. Everyone is encouraged to stay to their seats and not move about the room.
  • If you need anything at your table please give us a wave – we don’t mind – our staff are minimizing trips about the room but are happy to help. We will wait to move between songs so that no one has to raise their voice to speak.
  • We encourage the use of debit cards for tap payment, but will accept all forms of payment.

We Respect the Latest Physical Distancing Guidelines

  • We have installed plexiglass around the bar and service areas as well as a hanging, removable barrier between closer-proximity seating.
  • The room is made more spacious by increasing walkway areas and distancing tables by 6’6”. Tables and chairs may only be moved by staff prior to guest arrival to accommodate larger groups.
  • Group seating is limited to a maximum of six guests.
  • All ticket sales will be made in groups of two or four to match the physically distanced floor-plan. We have 16 tables available. If you need an odd number of seats please email us info@hermannsjazz.com.
  • The total seating limit is reduced to 40, following the Provincial guideline of 50 person capacity.
  • We are using a pass bar so that staff do not need to enter and exit the cooking areas. Dirty dishes are collected from the bar area to be returned by a designated bus person.
  • Some shows will have two seatings per evening (7pm and 9:30pm) to improve capacity.

We Have Rigorous Employee Safety Procedures

  • All staff and volunteers are on board with a commitment to safety and they have signed an employee commitment. Daily health checks are required.
  • We have assured staff that no one should feel duress to attend work if they feel they are at risk of becoming infected or infecting others.

We Have Updated Sanitation Protocols

  • Our staff wear masks and use COVID approved sanitizer repeatedly at the bar and on cloths to sanitize any shared items (i.e. debit card reader).
  • We have enhanced cleaning protocols to our already rigorous standards
  • Sanitizer is easily accessible on entry and at stations throughout the space
  • We have upgraded our air filtration system to MER13.

Guest Responsibilities

  • We ask that guests continue to maintain a physical distance of at least six (6) feet from other guests that are not part of your group, staff members, musicians and volunteers.
  • We ask that you respect the safety of others and stay home if you are feeling sick.
  • Masks are mandatory.
  • No sing-along; no dancing; please avoid raising your voice above speaking level.

September at Hermann’s Jazz Club

Posted on Posted in News Items

The Jazz On View Society presents September at Hermann’s Jazz Club!

Still riding high on the enthusiasm of assuming the lease July 15th – the Jazz On View Society looks forward to a fantastic fall. Days get shorter, the evenings cooler and friends return to cozy in for good evenings and great shows.

There is a lot to share this month.

First to note is a shift in our showtimes, shows now begin at 7:30, unless noted, to end a little earlier for those that want a good night’s sleep.

Sunday Brunch Matinee Performances have been added to the roster. Doors at 12:30. Shows 1:30-3:30.

A family friendly event, with good food and toe-tapping music to entertain. Free for children, grand-children and great grand-children.

Cafe Scientifique returns to Tuesday evenings.

Hosted by the University of Victoria the Cafe’s are an informal series of talks, delivered by experts in the field, designed to engage the public in learning about recent research in science and to stimulate discussion around some of the most exciting topics in modern science. Tickets and info at:

https://www.uvic.ca/research/centres/biomedical/events-outreach/cafe-scientifique/index.php

And finally, a much deserved shout out to JoV board member William Stewart, who has been working hard in the wee hours between shows about the Club. We have stage improvements and great new sound system (a number of things that wobble less) thanks to his work. As well, he has updated much of our website.

https://hermannsjazz.com/gallery is a great place to start exploring, showing hundreds of photos and video of the history of Hermanns.

We also have a new Chef, Crystal (Cat) Mattinson. She has also done an unbelievable amount of work this past month (unbelievable!). The View Street Social is now open for food service at 11:30am.

I already said and finally – but – honestly I could thank hundreds of people. Joan Looy, you think your a bother when I’m busy, but I couldn’t have survived August without you. Thank you. People – suppliers, plumbers, electricians, contractors, the City of Victoria, the DVBA and Tourism Victoria, our board and staff, have been wonderful to work with – the amount of enthusiastic, genuine and generous support received is just further testimony of how much Hermann’s is loved.

I am so happy to be back. Thank you.

Nichola

May 21st Update

Posted on Posted in News Items

Thanks to your generous outpouring of support we have saved Hermann’s Jazz Club!

Arts On View Society (Jazz on View) is now finalizing hundreds of details to begin operating Hermann’s and the View Street Social Club next door, with a five-year lease, and on solid financial ground.

We are working hard to have the five-year lease signed, equipment upgraded, improvements planned, and all operations and licences transferred from the current owners (Hermann Nieweler’s three children) by July 15.

The volunteer board is working with the wonderful staff at Hermann’s to obtain required permits for the Club’s continued operations. Liquor licences alone take eight- to nine-weeks to be approved.

Meanwhile, we are building a budget and plan for improvements.

We remain committed to the big vision of transforming the entire building, including the upstairs, into the community-owned and operated “Arts On View” performing and visual arts centre. We are talking to the estate about the potential for a lease on the rest of the building.

Very importantly, we continue to explore ways to purchase the entire building to ensure long-term success and keep costs low for artists and patrons into the future. $8 million or more is needed for the big vision and an Arts Endowment.

A special thank to all of our donors for your generous financial support.

Those of you who have contributed $1,000 or more will soon receive a separate email outlining details of the Patrons Program and how to enjoy your patron’s tickets. (Which will start after we are the operator of Hermann’s.)

Arts On View is encouraged by the enthusiasm and support we continue to receive from you, the Hermann’s and jazz community.

Thanks to you, Hermann’s Jazz Club remains open – and its future looks bright.

See you at the Club!
