Like many other entertainment and hospitality venues in Victoria the pandemic has resulted in economic challenges to the Society. Fortunately, in early 2020 the Society was able to quickly adjust to the impact of the pandemic through introducing livestream shows featuring our local performers, obtaining subsidies and reducing expenses. While this enabled us to ‘keep our doors open’ we are still faced with ongoing operational challenges, caused by a number of factors including reluctance of some patrons to return to live venues, staff shortages, and increasing costs of supplies. At the same time, ticket revenue has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. Your gift will help to ensure that we keep Hermann’s Jazz Club (the longest continuous running jazz club in Canada) open. Donors like you will provide the opportunity for local and visiting musicians to showcase their talents and to build their followings. Many nationally and internationally acclaimed acts have graced the stage at Hermann’s Jazz Club over the years. We continue to welcome longtime bands with loyal followings. Artists such as CanUS, the Tom Vickery Trio, and local legend/reedman Al Pease have performed for over 40 years, and continue to regularly provide unique live music experiences to their audiences. At the Arts on View Society, this group of long-time performers is lovingly thought of as the “Legacy Performers”. Each one of them is an important part of our history, and also our future.
Artists must struggle through a long process of gaining the recognition they need to become successful in their field. From the beginning of Hermann’s Jazz Club, artists have been supported with opportunities to perform, to be mentored, and to build their followings. This program ensures that we can help develop and attract the highest quality musicians to our community. Donors like you keep our inspiring music education and community engagement programs going, ensuring accessibility for all. Your gift to the Emerging Artists Campaign will help take the next generation of artists from emerging to established.
