I am writing to support the campaign by Jazz on View to purchase and operate Hermann’s Jazz Club (Times Colonist Feb. 16 – Group makes bid to preserve historic Hermann’s Jazz Club).

Every city should have a Hermann’s, but many don’t. As one of the fortunate places that has such a treasure, we’d be very foolish to let it go.

Hermann’s is much more than just a nightclub. While it may be primarily a jazz club, Hermann’s musical offerings embrace a broad spectrum of styles, from string quartets to blues bands to big bands. And the club is not just the haunt of jazz afficionados. It is open to, and well-used by, the community at large. From supporting music education, providing opportunities for emerging new talents, showcasing local musicians, and presenting top talents, Hermann’s is a unique asset for the whole region.

It could even be that this club is woven into the fabric of our local culture more than we realize. There are surely many thousands in the region who have enjoyed and benefited from this all-ages venue that supports, nurtures, and celebrates live music. Now is the time for the community at large to recognize the value Hermann’s adds to life in our city and support the effort to save it.
