History of Hermann’s Jazz Club
Hermann’s Jazz Club began nearly 40 years ago at the Bastion Inn (now Bedford Regency). One fateful night in 1981, Hermann Nieweler was persuaded by his friend Barry Stubbs to book Friday Harbor’s Island City Jazz Band for a weekend performance at his hotel. It was a huge success, and since Hermann loved a good party with music and friends, he established the Dixieland Inn lounge at the hotel. Hermann moved the club to its current View & Blanshard location in 1986 and the rest, as they say, is history. Our friend Hermann passed on June 10th, 2015 at age 79, having run the club to the end. His spirit remains alive as live music fans enjoy his legacy every night.
Some regular bands and artists have been playing at the club weekly for over 35 years, including Tom Vickery, CANUS and Dixieland Express. Many nationally and internationally acclaimed acts have graced our stage, including but not limited to: Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Wheeler, Renee Rosnes, Dewey Redman, Loudon Wainwright III, Hal Galper, Brian Auger, Judy Collins, Eric Bibb, David Francey, Michael Kaeshammer, Maria Muldaur, Michael Buble and Rob McConnell. Stars Diana Krall and Nelly Furtado played at the club before being discovered. Jazz, blues, folk, big band and every genre of high calibre music can be found at the club.
Hermann’s is cozy and unique. It is an ambient, licensed restaurant and lounge, with high calibre live music. Audiences are attentive, polite and engaged.
